Starting November 8, 2024, nationals from South Korea, Norway, Finland, Slovakia, Denmark, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco, and Liechtenstein will be able to enter China for business, tourism, family visits, or transit for up to 15 days without needing a visa. This expansion increases the number of countries benefiting from visa-free access to China to a total of 25. The announcement was made in conjunction with a meeting between President Xi Jinping and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Beijing. During this meeting, Fico expressed Slovakia’s enthusiasm for Chinese investments in its clean energy sector, and signaled interest in joining ‘Friends of Peace’, a coalition spearheaded by China and Brazil aimed at peacefully resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
This policy shift also underscores China’s goal to reinvigorate inbound tourism. Since last year, China has sequentially relaxed COVID-19-induced travel restrictions on foreign visitors. Currently, citizens from 16 countries, including France and Germany, can enter China visa-free for up to 15 days for various purposes. Moreover, individuals from 54 other nations, such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, can enter through 37 designated ports and remain for 72 or 144 hours without a visa, provided they have valid onward tickets.
The National Immigration Administration reported that 14.64 million foreign visitors entered China in the first half of the year, marking a notable 152% increase compared to the previous year. Notably, over 8.5 million of these entries were made without a visa, representing 58% of the total inbound travel and indicating a substantial 190% year-on-year increase.
