Thailand to Implement Electronic Travel Authorization for 93 Visa-Exempt Countries

Thailand plans to start a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system to improve security and make it easier for international visitors to enter the country. This change will affect people from 93 countries who can currently visit Thailand without a visa.

ETA Pilot Phase and Full Deployment

The ETA system will start being tested in December 2024, and it should be fully used by June 2025. During this testing time, the system will be checked and improved to work well. The goal is to make Thailand’s travel rules match those of other countries.

Online Application Process

Once implemented, the ETA application process will be conducted entirely online through the Thai e-Visa portal at www.thaievisa.go.th. Travelers will need to submit their applications in advance of their trip. Notably, the ETA will be free of charge, and each entry into Thailand mandates a new application.

Mandatory for Eligible Nationalities

The ETA will be compulsory for all visa-exempt travelers entering Thailand by air, land, or sea. However, certain travelers, such as those holding diplomatic or official passports and UN Laissez-Passer, will be exempt from this requirement. Border Pass users are also excluded.

Benefits and Objectives of the ETA System

The primary objectives of the ETA system include enhancing security, preventing illegal migration, and monitoring health risks. Approved ETA holders will benefit from expedited entry through automated gates at immigration checkpoints using a QR code provided on the ETA document. These upgrades are anticipated to make the entry process smoother and more efficient.

Email Confirmation and System Checks

Applicants will receive an email confirmation of their ETA approval, generally within 24 hours. The system will verify passport authenticity, check for criminal records, and cross-reference relevant Interpol notices. Although some technical details are still pending, such as potential entry limits, the system aims to offer both security and convenience to travelers.

Current Visa Policy and Future Implications

Under the existing visa policy, nationals of 93 countries can stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa, with a possibility of extending their stay for an additional 30 days. The new ETA system may affect practices like ‘border runs,’ where travelers exit and re-enter the country to reset their visa-free stay period.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will release more detailed requirements and guidelines as the rollout date nears. The move towards the ETA system indicates Thailand’s commitment to modernizing its immigration framework while maintaining robust security standards.
