South Africa’s New Visa Scheme to Boost Tourism from India and China

South Africa is introducing a groundbreaking visa scheme, the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS), starting in January 2025. The scheme aims to simplify travel for tourists from India and China and enhance South Africa’s tourism industry by expediting the visa process for these key markets.

Key Features of the TTOS Initiative

The primary focus of TTOS is to increase tourism from India and China by streamlining the visa application process. Presently, India accounts for 3.9% and China for 1.8% of international visitors to South Africa. The new scheme aims to boost these numbers significantly.

TTOS, launched in January 2025, is part of a broader strategy to transform South Africa’s visa processing system.

Under TTOS, approved tour operators from India and China will be invited to register with the South African Department of Home Affairs. These operators will undergo a rigorous screening process and will bear responsibility for their travel groups. Once registered, these operators can submit group visa applications. A specialized team of adjudicators will process these applications to ensure faster and more efficient handling.

TTOS aims to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles that have historically impeded South Africa’s tourism sector. By fast-tracking visas for tourists traveling with vetted operators, South Africa hopes to attract more visitors from India and China. Research indicates that a 10% annual increase in tourism could stimulate economic growth by 0.6% and create tens of thousands of new jobs.

South Africa aims to increase the number of Indian tourists from 16,000 to 100,000 by the end of 2024. Additionally, the scheme proposes a 90-day visa waiver for Indian and Chinese tourists, further simplifying travel to South Africa.

TTOS was developed in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, the Presidency, and Operation Vulindlela, showcasing a coordinated effort to boost the tourism sector.

TTOS serves as an interim measure, with the ultimate goal being a fully automated, secure digital visa system that delivers tourist visa outcomes within seconds.

Additional Initiatives

Complementing the TTOS, South Africa has also proposed introducing an eVisa system for Indian visitors, although this is yet to be rolled out.

The government is considering a 90-day visa waiver for visitors from India and China, allowing for visa-free stays of up to three months.
These initiatives reflect South Africa’s commitment to making travel easier for tourists from key markets like India and China.
