South Africa has made its online traveller declaration mandatory from July 1, 2026, requiring most arrivals and departures to file customs details before travel.

What changed

The South African Revenue Service says the rule now covers travellers entering or leaving the country by air, land, sea and rail. It applies to South African citizens, residents and foreign travellers, and it is meant to capture declarations for goods, currency and other controlled items.

Who is affected

Most travellers need to comply, but air and sea passengers who are only transiting through South Africa and do not leave the designated transit area are excluded. Children and infants must also be covered, with a parent or guardian able to complete the declaration on their behalf.

When it takes effect

The requirement took effect on July 1, 2026. SARS says the declaration should be submitted no more than 24 hours before departure, or no more than 24 hours before the last leg of a journey to South Africa if the trip includes stops.

What travelers should know

  • Travellers should complete the declaration before travel if possible, but SARS says they will not be denied entry or departure solely because the form was not filed in advance.
  • If pre-travel filing is not possible, SARS says officials, self-service kiosks or other assistance may be available at the port, and paper forms are limited to specific exception cases.
  • Travellers should have passport or travel document details, travel details, contact details and information about any goods or currency that need to be declared before they start.

Why this matters

For travelers, this is an extra customs step rather than a visa change, so visa-free visitors, visa holders and South African passport holders should check the new declaration rule before they book or board. That is an inference from SARS’s customs guidance, which frames the requirement as a declaration of goods and currency rather than an immigration authorization.

Official guidance

SARS directs travellers to its Customs Online Traveller Declaration system and says confirmation and instructions are sent after submission. If details change before arrival or departure, the declaration should be updated before proceeding through Customs processing.

Apply now

Travellers who need to submit the declaration before departure can use the official SARS Traveller portal at tools.sars.gov.za. This is the government channel for the customs declaration, not a visa application.
