Pakistan to Potentially Grant Visa-Free Entry to Hong Kong Citizens

In a move that could boost financial and tourism ties, Pakistan is considering granting visa waivers to Hong Kong residents, said Pakistani Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi. The announcement was made while traveling to Hong Kong to attend the Belt and Road Summit. This initiative is part of a broader approach to boosting capital change and tourism for both regions.

Under the visa waiver insurance proposal, Hong Kong citizens may be able to enter Pakistan without a visa. This is expected to facilitate commercial adventures, travel, and much less complicated cultural exchange. Hashmi highlighted the untapped potential in investment and tourism in Pakistan. It is hoped that the insurance will encourage the people of Hong Kong to become more aware of the opportunities that Pakistan offers.

Currently, Pakistani nationals need a visa to enter Hong Kong, and vice versa. However, this move is not contingent upon a reciprocal agreement from Hong Kong. Hashmi expressed optimism that Hong Kong might reconsider its 2014 red travel alert for Pakistan, which was issued after a series of violent incidents, including the tragic attack on a military school in Peshawar.

The travel advisory, which is the second-highest alert level, advises against non-essential travel to Pakistan. Hashmi believes the security situation has significantly improved since then and deserves a thorough review.

Hong Kong already offers visa-free entry to citizens of over 160 countries, but this does not currently include Pakistan. By potentially granting visa-free entry to Hong Kong citizens, Pakistan aims to catch the wave of increased mobility and international cooperation that characterizes modern travel policies.

The introduction of visa-free travel is anticipated to benefit both regions economically. For Pakistan, increasing the number of visitors from Hong Kong could mean more business investments and an uptick in tourism-related revenue. During his speech at the Belt and Road Summit, Hashmi extended an invitation to Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu to visit Pakistan, emphasizing that such a visit could strengthen ties and lead to substantive economic benefits.

Hashmi also mentioned plans to engage with Hong Kong’s financial and professional services sectors during his next visit. This is aimed at further promoting Pakistan as a viable and attractive market for investment.

No official date has been set for the implementation of the visa-free policy, and Pakistani officials are awaiting further discussions and approvals. The proposal is still in its preliminary stages and would need ratification from both regions’ governments.

In the meantime, potential travelers and businesses are advised to keep an eye on official announcements for any changes to visa policies between Hong Kong and Pakistan.
